What is Shiatsu

With origins going back thousands of years within Chinese medicine, Shiatsu is a Japanese therapy now practiced all over the world with the additional understanding of Western physiology and anatomy.

Shi-atsu means ‘finger-pressure’. Through touch, gentle pressure, stretching and simple movements shiatsu is a deeply relaxing treatment that supports the body to find balance alleviating physical and emotional conditions.

Treatments strengthen the body’s natural ability to heal and maintain general good health and well-being.

What to expect from a Shiatsu treatment

Treatments are given fully clothed, either on a futon mat on the floor, seated in a chair or on a massage table, whatever is most practical and comfortable for the receiver.

Throughout the treatment a shiatsu practionner will move around the client treating all parts of the body with the client either on their back, front or side.

A treatment usually lasts about 1 hour. For the first treatment you will be asked questions regarding your health, symptoms and wellbeing so it will take longer, about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Precautions

A massage therapy should never be used as a substitution for medical treatment and a General Practitioner (GP) should be consulted first if there is any doubt about your suitability for Shiatsu.

A letter may be asked for by the Practitioner from your General Practitioner if there are any major health concerns, such as ulcerations, injuries blood clots and bone degenerative diseases, which will agree for the treatment to be carried out.

Please provide the practitioner with a complete and accurate health history.
